Task 1: Create the web apps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this section, you will create two instances of a web application deployed in the two different Azure regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the Azure portal home page, click Create a resource<\/strong>, then select Web App<\/strong> (if this resource type is not listed on the page, use the search box at the top of the page to search for it and select it).<\/li>On the Create Web App<\/strong> page, on the Basics<\/strong> tab, use the information in the table below to create the first web application.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nSetting<\/strong><\/td>Value<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead>Subscription<\/td> Select your subscription<\/td><\/tr> Resource group<\/td> Select Create new<\/strong> Name: Exceedlabs-RG-TM1<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Name<\/td> ExceedlabsWebAppEastUSMN<\/strong> (where xx are your initials to make the name unique)<\/td><\/tr>Publish<\/td> Code<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Runtime stack<\/td> ASP.NET V4.8<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Operating system<\/td> Windows<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Region<\/td> East US<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Windows Plan<\/td> Select Create new<\/strong> Name: ExceedlabsAppServicePlanEastUS<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Sku and size<\/td> Standard S1 100 total ACU, 1.75-GB memory<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\nClick Next : Deployment (Preview)<\/strong>, then click Next : Monitoring<\/strong>.<\/li>On the Monitoring<\/strong> tab, select the No<\/strong> option for Enable Application Insights<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nClick Review + create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nClick Create<\/strong>. On the Azure portal home page, click Create a resource<\/strong>.<\/li>In the search box at the top of the page, type Traffic Manager profile<\/strong>, and then select it from the pop-up list.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nClick Create<\/strong>.<\/li>On the Create Traffic Manager profile<\/strong> page, use the information in the table below to create the Traffic Manager profile.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nSetting<\/strong><\/td>Value<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead>Name<\/td> Exceedlabs-TMProfileMN01<\/strong> (where xx are your initials to make the name unique)<\/td><\/tr>Routing method<\/td> Priority<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Subscription<\/td> Select your subscription<\/td><\/tr> Resource group<\/td> Exceedlabs-RG-TM1<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Resource group location<\/td> East US<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\nClick Create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTask 3: Add Traffic Manager endpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this section, you will add the website in the East US as the primary endpoint to route all the user traffic. You will then add the website in West Europe as a failover endpoint. If the primary endpoint becomes unavailable, then traffic will automatically be routed to the failover endpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the Azure portal home page, click All resources<\/strong>, then click on Exceedlabs-TMProfileMN<\/strong> in the resources list.<\/li>Under Settings<\/strong>, select Endpoints<\/strong>, and then click Add<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nOn the Add endpoint<\/strong> page, enter the information from the table below.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\nSetting<\/strong><\/td>Value<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead>Type<\/td> Azure endpoint<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Name<\/td> myPrimaryEndpoint<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Target resource type<\/td> App Service<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Target resource<\/td> ExceedlabsWebAppEastUSMN (East US)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Priority<\/td> 1<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\nClick Add<\/strong>.<\/li>Repeat steps 2-4 above to create the failover endpoint. Use the same settings as before except for the information in the table below.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nSetting<\/strong><\/td>Value<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead>Name<\/td> myFailoverEndpoint<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Target resource<\/td> ExceedlabsWebAppWestEurope (West Europe)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>Priority<\/td> 2<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\nSetting a priority of 2 means that traffic will route to this failover endpoint if the configured primary endpoint becomes unhealthy.<\/li> The two new endpoints are displayed in the Traffic Manager profile. Notice that after a few minutes the Monitoring status<\/strong> should change to Online<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nTask 4: Test the Traffic Manager profile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this section, you will check the DNS name of your Traffic Manager profile, and then you will configure the primary endpoint so that it is unavailable. You will then verify that the web app is still available, to test that the Traffic Manager profile is successfully sending traffic to the failover endpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the Exceedlabs-TMProfile<\/strong> page, click Overview<\/strong>.<\/li>On the Overview<\/strong> screen, copy the DNS name<\/strong> entry to the clipboard (or take note of it somewhere).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nOpen a web browser tab, and paste (or enter) the DNS name<\/strong> entry (http:\/\/exceedlabs-tmprofilemn01.trafficmanager.net) into the address bar, and press Enter.<\/li>The web app\u2019s default web site should be displayed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nCurrently all traffic is being sent to the primary endpoint as you set its Priority<\/strong> to 1<\/strong>.<\/li>To test the failover endpoint is working properly, you need to disable the primary site.<\/li> On the Exceedlabs-TMProfile<\/strong> page, on the overview screen, select myPrimaryEndpoint<\/strong>.<\/li>On the myPrimaryEndpoint<\/strong> page, under Status<\/strong>, click Disabled<\/strong>, and then click Save<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nClose the myPrimaryEndpoint<\/strong> page (click the X<\/strong> in the top right corner of the page).<\/li>On the Exceedlabs-TMProfile<\/strong> page, the Monitor status<\/strong> for myPrimaryEndpoint<\/strong> should now be Disabled<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nOpen a new web browser session, and paste (or enter) the DNS name<\/strong> entry (Exceedlabs-tmprofile.trafficmanager.net) into the address bar, and press Enter.<\/li>Verify that the web app is still responding. As the primary endpoint was not available, the traffic was instead routed to the failover endpoint to allow the web site to still function.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nReminder<\/strong>: Don\u2019t forget to delete or shutdown all unused Azure resources after your labs for cost saving<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
