Lab 1: Manage Agile project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this Lab, you will use Azure Boards to perform a number of common agile planning and portfolio management tasks, including management of teams, areas, iterations, work items, sprints and capacity, customizing Kanban boards, defining dashboards, and customizing team processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Task 1: Manage teams, areas, and iterations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this task, you will create a new team and configure its area and iterations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each new project is configured with a default team, which name matches the project name. You have the option of creating additional teams. Each team can be granted access to a suite of Agile tools and team assets. The ability to create multiple teams gives you the flexibility to choose the proper balance between autonomy and collaboration across the enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Verify that the web browser displays your Azure DevOps organization with the\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards<\/strong>\u00a0project you generated in the previous Lab.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: Alternatively, you can access the project page directly by navigating to the [https:\/\/dev.azure.com\/<your-Azure-DevOps-account-name>\/Agile%20Planning%20and%20Portfolio%20Management%20with%20Azure%20Boards) URL, where the placeholder, represents your account name.<\/p>\n\n\n\nClick the cogwheel icon labeled\u00a0Project settings<\/strong>\u00a0located in the lower left corner of the page to open the\u00a0Project settings<\/strong>\u00a0page.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nIn the\u00a0General<\/strong>\u00a0section, select the\u00a0Teams<\/strong>\u00a0tab. There are already a few teams in this project, but you\u2019ll create a new one for this lab. Click\u00a0New Team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn the\u00a0Create a new team<\/strong>\u00a0pane, in the\u00a0Team name<\/strong>\u00a0textbox, type\u00a0PUL-Web<\/strong>, leave other settings with their default values, and click\u00a0Create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn the list of\u00a0Teams<\/strong>, select the newly created team to view its details.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: By default, the new team has only you as its member. You can use this view to manage such functionality as team membership, notifications, and dashboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\nClick\u00a0Iterations and Area Paths<\/strong>\u00a0link at the top of the\u00a0PUL-Web<\/strong>\u00a0page to start defining the schedule and scope of the team.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nAt the top of the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0pane, select the\u00a0Iterations<\/strong>\u00a0tab and then click\u00a0+ Select iteration(s)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSelect\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards\\Sprint 1<\/strong>\u00a0and click\u00a0Save and close<\/strong>. Note that this first sprint has already passed. This is because the demo data generator is designed to build out project history so that this sprint occurs in the past.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: The new team will use the same iteration schedule that\u2019s already in place for the other teams, but you could create a custom one if that is more suitable for your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRepeat the previous step to add\u00a0Sprint 2<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sprint 3<\/strong>. The second sprint is our current iteration, and the third is in the near future.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nBack on the\u00a0Boards\u00a0pane, at the top of the pane, select the\u00a0Areas\u00a0tab. You will find there an automatically generated area with the name matching the name of the team.<\/li> Click the ellipsis symbol next to the\u00a0default area\u00a0entry and, in the drop down list, select\u00a0Include sub areas<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: The default setting for all teams is to exclude sub-area paths. We will change it to include sub-areas so that the team gets visibility into all of the work items from all teams. Optionally, the management team could also choose to not include sub-areas, which automatically removes work items from their view as soon as they are assigned to one of the teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Task 2: Manage work items<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn this task, you will step through common work item management tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Work items play a prominent role in Azure DevOps. Whether describing work to be done, impediments to release, test definitions, or other key items, work items are the workhorse of modern projects. In this task you\u2019ll focus on using various work items to set up the plan to extend the Parts Unlimited site with a product training section. While it can be daunting to build out such a substantial part of a company\u2019s offering, Azure DevOps and the Scrum process make it very manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note<\/strong>: This task is designed to illustrate a variety of ways you can create different kinds of work items, as well as to demonstrate the breadth of features available on the platform. As a result, these steps should not be viewed as prescriptive guidance for project management. The features are intended to be flexible enough to fit your process needs, so explore and experiment as you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn the vertical navigational pane of the Azure DevOps portal, select the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0icon and, select\u00a0Work Items<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: There are many ways to create work items in Azure DevOps, and we\u2019ll explore a few of them. Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as firing one off from a dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn the\u00a0Work Items<\/strong>\u00a0window, click on\u00a0+ New Work Item > Epic<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nIn the\u00a0Enter title<\/strong>\u00a0textbox, type\u00a0Product training<\/strong>.<\/li>In the upper left corner, select the\u00a0Unassigned<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select your user account in order to assign the new work item to yourself.<\/li>Next to the\u00a0Area<\/strong>\u00a0entry, select the\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0PUL-Web<\/strong>. This will set the\u00a0Area<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards\\PUL-Web<\/strong>.<\/li>Next to the\u00a0Iteration<\/strong>\u00a0entry, select the\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0Sprint 2<\/strong>. This will set the\u00a0Iteration<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Agile Planning and Portfolio Management with Azure Boards\\Sprint 2<\/strong>.<\/li>Click\u00a0Save<\/strong>\u00a0to finalize your changes.\u00a0Do not close it<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: Ordinarily you would want to fill out as much information as possible, but this is sufficient for the purposes of this lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: The work item form includes all of the relevant work item settings. This includes details about who it\u2019s assigned to, its status across many parameters, and all the associated information and history for how it has been handled since creation. One of the key areas to focus on is the Related Work<\/strong>. We will explore one of the ways to add a feature to this epic.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn the\u00a0Related work<\/strong>\u00a0section on the lower right-side, select the\u00a0Add link<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0New item<\/strong>.<\/li>On the\u00a0Add link<\/strong>\u00a0panel, in the\u00a0Work item type<\/strong>\u00a0dropdown list, select\u00a0Feature<\/strong>, in the\u00a0Title<\/strong>\u00a0textbox, type\u00a0Training dashboard<\/strong>\u00a0and click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: On the Training dashboard<\/strong> panel, note that the assignment, Area<\/strong>, and Iteration<\/strong> are already set to the same values as the epic that the feature is based on. In addition, the feature is automatically linked to the parent item it was created from.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn the\u00a0Training dashboard<\/strong>\u00a0panel, click\u00a0Save & Close<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nIn the vertical navigational pane of the Azure DevOps portal, in the list of the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0items, select\u00a0Boards<\/strong>.<\/li>On the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0panel, select the\u00a0PUL-Web boards<\/strong>\u00a0entry. This will open the board for that particular team.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nOn the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0panel, in the upper right corner, select the\u00a0Backlog items<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0Features<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: This will make it easy to add tasks and other work items to the features.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHover with the mouse pointer over the rectangle representing the\u00a0Training dashboard<\/strong>\u00a0feature. This will reveal the ellipsis symbol in its upper right corner.<\/li>Click the ellipsis icon and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0Add Product Backlog Item<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nIn the textbox of the new product backlog item, type\u00a0As a customer, I want to view new tutorials<\/strong>\u00a0and press the\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0key to save the entry.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: This creates a new product backlog item (PBI) work item that is a child of the feature and shares its area and iteration.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRepeat the previous step to add two more PBIs designed to enable the customer to see their recently viewed tutorials and to request new tutorials named, respectively,\u00a0As a customer, I want to see tutorials I recently viewed<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0As a customer, I want to request new tutorials<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nOn the\u00a0Boards<\/strong>\u00a0panel, in the upper right corner, select the\u00a0Features<\/strong>\u00a0entry and, in the dropdown list, select\u00a0Backlog items<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nNote<\/strong>: Backlog items have a state that defines where they are relative to being completed.
